« Ah! When will the September roses bloom again! »

Paul Verlaine
(Translated from French)

For its autumn exhibition, the Bullukian Foundation celebrates drawing in all its many forms. Whether created in the studio or in situ, as with Camille Chastang, or at the turn of a sidewalk on a trip to the other side of the world, as with Thomas Henriot, it is always the autonomous, free and uninhibited gesture that permeates the work of these two artists.

Avant que ne fanent les fleurs is an ode to these images in motion, where the line breaks free from paper to take on other supports, where ink overflows frames to colonize new spaces, and where drawings bloom like gardens. Here, nature abounds, blossoming in bouquets of bright red roses, violets, and blue and yellow irises, almost making us forget how fleeting and ephemeral they are.

But on closer inspection, we discover that everything threatens to wither away: the paths of roses end up adorning inanimate bodies, and the flowers that seemed the most delicate conceal sharp little thorns that, instead of caressing our fingertips, could well skin us even more.

In the end, this picking won’t be all rest, and it’s up to us not to rub up against it too much: the tiniest splinters are often the source of our deepest wounds. It’s up to us not to get too close to them: the tiniest splinters are often the source of our deepest wounds.
